How To Light The Pilot Light on Your Hot Water Heater

February 13, 2020

If all you’re getting out of your faucet is cold water, it’s likely the pilot light has gone out on your hot water heater. In most cases, you can fix this situation yourself and get your hot water back in a few hours. Here are some tips to relight the pilot light. Find Controls on Your Water Heater Water heaters have a control knob on the outside located on the gas regulator valve. This is where natural gas pipes into your water heater. Turn the knob to the “off” position. You now need to wait five minutes so that any gas will dissipate. When you come back to the water heater, smell around it. While natural gas doesn’t smell on its own, gas providers add mercaptan so that it smells like rotten eggs when there’s a leak. If you smell this after five minutes, contact an HVAC professional at Littleton Heating and Air Conditioning. Lingering gas points to a huge safety problem that an expert needs to assess. Turn the Gas Back On If everything is safe, turn the knob to “pilot.” You then need to either press down on the knob or press a separate reset button. You will...

How To Optimize Your Energy Efficiency This Winter

November 8, 2019

Littleton Heating and Air Conditioning is thrilled to meet all the heating needs for homeowners in Littleton and throughout the surrounding areas. That includes providing advice, and our customers often ask us for tips to save money in winter. Here are four essential points to consider. 1. Take Advantage of Localized Heating Sources Open curtains and lift shades to let in more sunlight. Consider fireplaces, space heaters and other local heating sources for the areas of the home in which you spend the most time. Doing so lets you target a lower temperature for the home overall, and even a 3-degree difference can have a substantial effect on your bill. 2. Hit Your Temperature Targets the Smart Way If you don’t already have a smart thermostat, invest in one. It is likely to pay for itself in the first year alone. Use the smart or programmable aspects to create temperature blocks, such as one temperature while you sleep and another while you are at work. Maintaining the same temperature throughout the day and night is wasteful and can easily cost you 10 percent or more. 3. Tune Up Your System and Keep It Clean Schedule a comprehensive inspection and tune-up...

How to Fix Uneven Heating in Your Home

October 17, 2019

If certain rooms in your home stay cold while other ones heat up reliably, there are things you can do to even out the temperature. Regardless of the style of heating system you have in your home or the age of your property, Littleton Heating & Air Conditioning can help you create a comfortable and warm space throughout the winter. Here are some tips on how to fix uneven heating in your home. Check Insulation Levels Having a properly insulated home can keep heat from escaping various rooms. If you have large windows, make sure that they are double-paned and energy-efficient. Check the insulation throughout your home, and pay special attention to the attic area. Your roof can be a major source of heat loss and lead to uneven heating. Turn the Fan to “On” The default setting on most thermostats is to only run the fan when the heater is running. Changing the fan setting from “auto” to “on” will keep the fan on at all times. This will circulate the air in your home and keep warm air mixing with cold. Install Zoned Temperature Systems There are several different types of heaters that will allow you to set...

HVAC Ductwork Basics

September 15, 2019

It is both paramount to understand and necessary to explain the importance that ductwork has to the HVAC worker. Ducts are the veins and blood vessels of a home’s HVAC system, and the single most effective way to manage and control indoor climate and temperature. This is because ductwork carries and distributes the airflow from a home’s HVAC system to the rest of the home, allowing it to be heated or cooled depending on the needs of the climate and temperature outside. Your duct system works by sucking in the air that enters the building and passes it into your HVAC unit, which then heats and/or cools the air and courses it throughout the ducts of the building. What You Should Have in a Proper Ventilation System The efficiency of your ventilation system will depend upon its design. Ducts should have properly designed return vents in order to promote a stable equilibrium of heating or cooling and air pressure. The climate control and efficiency of a building otherwise become very unstable. Professionals at Littleton Heating & Air Conditioning are equipped with the expertise and experience to install and maintain the proper ventilation system that will suit the needs of homeowners...

Ways to Fix Uneven Cooling in Your Home

July 16, 2019

Uneven cooling in your home can make it warmer than you’d like in some rooms. It could be indicative of an issue with your AC unit that should be repaired by experienced AC technicians, but here are a few things that might help. Check Your Air Filters Having excess dust in your air filters can cause air to be backed up in certain rooms. Replace them regularly with new filters to avoid air being stagnant in some areas of your house. Inspect Your Ductwork Cracks in your duct system mean that cool air will leak out before it gets all the way to its destination. This usually happens in older systems or when they have not been cleaned regularly. A professional can inspect and repair them. Use the On Setting for Your Fan Your air will circulate more evenly with the fan setting turned to the on position. If you keep the fan on automatic, it will only blow when the air conditioning is actively cooling. This fan setting may run up your summer electric bill a bit because the fan will use some extra energy. Redirect Cool Air For homes with multiple stories, you may notice that the hot...

3 Easy Ways to Be More Energy Efficient

June 25, 2019

Reconciling comfort and energy efficiency can be tricky. You want to keep your home livable during times of extreme heat or cold. However, you also want to do your part for the environment as well as keeping your bills low. These three things can help you be more energy efficient without sacrificing your comfort. 1. Install Adequate Insulation Even with a furnace on full blast, you may still find yourself shivering in the winter. This is likely due to your home’s lack of insulation. Without proper insulation, a great deal of the heat can just escape while the cold seeps back in. You need to keep drafts from intruding around doors and windows. In fact, if there’s any place in your house that’s giving access to cold air, you should find a way to seal it off. Of course, these same principles apply to maintaining a cool interior during the summer. 2. Replace Your Equipment Most heating and air conditioning systems that are more than a decade old weren’t designed with the intention of conserving energy. If you’re using one that has been showing signs of age by either not performing as effectively as it should or taking longer than...
